St Peter's Church, Winterbourne Stoke, are raising funds for repairs.

The Norman church, mentioned in the Domesday Book, has set up an appeal “Raising the Roof” and will be embarking on a series of fund-raising events over the next 18 months. The money raised will help pay for renovations and improvements (including the installation of heating, so that the village can make greater use of the church as a hub) and meet ongoing costs to continue with their monthly service.

Jonathan Dutton, Treasurer of the church, is planning to walk the Pilgrim Route from St Peter’s Winterbourne Stoke to St Peter’s Rome, which will take him along the Pilgrims’ Way from Canterbury, across Europe and along the Via Francigena; a distance of 1,550 miles. He plans to start the walk on 21st August 2021, staying in pilgrim hostels, monasteries and camping en route, all in aid of "Raising the Roof".

As an introduction to the walk, Harry Bucknall, former Army Officer, journalist and author of “Like a Tramp Like a Pilgrim” a book recounting his adventures along the Via Francigena from Dorset to Rome in 2012, will be giving a talk.

“An evening filled with anecdote, adventure and history had us all enthralled throughout…he had the room captivated in the twists and turns of his adventure, a truly inspirational account”

The talk will take place on SATURDAY 24TH JULY, 2021, 6.00PM to 7.00PM

Tickets cost £10 and include a glass of wine and a tour of the gardens at the Old Rectory.
