Meet The Artists:
LINCOLN SELIGMAN
Lincoln is a sculptor and painter with a passion for India, with clients across the globe.
His travels often involved a stop off in India where many of his works are based. His connection with India was longstanding. His mother’s godfather was Rudyard Kipling, so tales of India loomed large in his childhood. His grandmother’s sculpture of Chandragupta, the founder of India as a state, still occupies the centre of the Lutyens parliament building in Delhi.
His works have captured the imagination of many including the Maharaja of Dungarpur who filled an art gallery with his works at the new aero museum in Udai Bilas Palace, Rajasthan.
Lincoln has sold out exhibitions of his work in London and New York and has exhibited at the Delhi Art Fair.
He works from his studios in London and Oxfordshire and continues to travel regularly to India to paint.
FERELITH MOLTENO
Ferelith was born in Scotland, the elder daughter of a successful sculptor mother and a Highland estate owner father of Italian/South African descent.
The families move to Pakistan, the evocative surroundings, combined with the lively encouragement of her mother encouraged Ferelith to draw and paint from an early age.
She has illustrated books on travel and cookery; exhibited in Scotland, London, Hampshire and India; taught art groups and held workshops, and has always kept an illustrated travel journal.
The real passion of her life is (and has been for the last 20 years) India. Ferelith has travelled extensively in India, and it is there that she finds the influences she needs for her latest mixed media
collages: old account books, train tickets, old stamps, examples of calligraphy and block printing, newspapers, cigarette packets and so on, often picked up in the street or found abandoned in some deserted palace.
CHARLES RODWELL
Charles Rodwell studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art 1974-78 where he gained an insight into the painters' world and has continued to paint professionally ever since. He has travelled extensively working in the Far East, India, and Sri Lanka.
He taught at the Marlborough Summer School for 20 years and now lives near Calne with a large studio in the garden which overlooks panoramic landscapes. His paintings reflect his close association with the Marlborough Downs and the surrounding countryside, painting 'plein air' in the landscape both in watercolour & oil.
In contrast he has recently accompanied groups of painters to Sri Lanka and India and the experiences and memories from these trips gives him plenty of inspiration to create large colourful oil paintings and figure compositions.
VANESSA PEASE
Vanessa lives in West Sussex and works from her studio at home. Her designs are inspired by her travels to India, Pakistan, Morocco and Turkey. She is also influenced by natural forms, often found while walking on the Downs or by the sea. From these Vanessa designs jewellery primarily in sterling silver, but also in gold.
Colour is an essential part of Vanessa’s jewellery and she often incorporates semi-precious stones and beads in her pieces. Surface and texture are key to her designs, as is achieving fluidity and movement in the final pieces.
Vanessa has exhibited her jewellery extensively in the UK; in art galleries, shops and at craft fairs and open houses.
GILL MARRINER-EDWARDS
At thirteen years of age Gill started her art training at a school in Surrey with a specialist Art Course. At eighteen she attended Bretton Hall College (University of Leeds) where she studied Art and trained as a teacher.
Gill continues to explore and experiment with collage, incorporating paint, charcoal, graphite pencils, scraps of photographs, prints, script and gold leaf.
For this exhibition Gill has not only taken her inspiration from some of the charming artefacts housed at Indigo but also tried to capture, in abstract form, an essence of their country of origin.
DIANA NEALE
There is a strong psychological aspect to Diana’s work.
Her practice began in photography. She created images which crossed the boundary between photography and mixed media, for which she was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Associateship. Over the years this has developed into a painting practice using oils and sometimes acrylic and collage. Her photography remains an important part of the process - the early blueprints of eventual paintings.
As a predominantly self-taught artist her process is largely unconscious; paintings are conceived and developed in her imagination using remembered images and feelings, often backed up by photographic reference.
Although for the most part, her painting is inspired by the ancient lands around Salisbury Plain, she also has a great interest in other landscapes, people and their cultures, particularly those of India, the Far East and North Africa.
