Salisbury Cathedral’s spire is to be the subject of a new exhibition in the West Cloister, from August 2 to September 3.

See Wiltshire Life’s August issue, out now, for the story of the exhibition which looks back over the last 70 years.

The spire has been in dire need of repair on two occasions: in the 1950s and 1980s. You’ll see death-defying photos of workmen on the scaffolding in the 1950s and read about how Prince Charles spearheaded a campaign to raise £6.5 million for repairs in the 1980s.

You’ll also read stories of how both the great and the good and the ordinary people of Salisbury rallied round to raise what must have seemed like an impossible sum for the 1980s appeal.
